The effects it has on the shooter’s family are relatively the same as they are in the previous paragraph. This affects the families of the victims, the family of the perpetrator, the school they’re enrolled in, and communities far and wide. Youth who are bullied are more likely to carry a weapon onto school campus with intentions to protect themselves from the bully, but often times if the student chooses to use this weapon to defend themselves, the situation escalates. Studies show that:”In 12 of 15 school shooting cases in the 1990s, the shooters had a history of being bullied”(Effects). This may be because it involves a greater number of victims, also because when someone is driven to the point of murder due to something as preventable as bullying, it illustrates just how ignorant people and schools are when it comes to bullying. Deborah Serani, a qualified psychologist writes that many of the survivors are usually plagued with thoughts like, “Why didn’t they love me enough to stay?” These feelings and thoughts continue to haunt the survivors’ daily lives long after the victim has passed.Īlthough suicide tremendously affects the survivors and those in the community, homicide caused by bullying has a greater, more widespread impact. Emotions such as abandonment and rejection continue to linger in the hearts of the suicide survivors. Many suicide survivors are stuck contemplating if they are to blame, and often times experience overwhelming rage, guilt and/or depression. Furthermore, some suicide survivors (people who have lost someone they were close to due to suicide) can suffer from things like PTSD. Families of the victims “all returned to the routine activities of daily life with much anguish and slowly receding anxiety… None had experienced one full day without thinking of the deceased,” (Lindqvist) even years after the loss of their loved one. Even though this obviously ends the victim’s life, it continues to impact the lives of those who knew the victim, and in this way it is a long term effect of bullying. An estimated 4,400 adolescents commit suicide each year, and half of them are directly related to bullying (Bullying Stats). Although it is tragic, Phoebe is far from special. This was a completely preventable outcome of bullying. “On January 14, 2010, after suffering continued harassment and an attempted physical assault, Phoebe Prince went home and committed suicide by hanging herself,” (Bullying). Phoebe Prince was a young girl who fell victim to bullying after she switched to a new school in 2010. In other cases, it may cripple the victim’s self image and identity for a very long time. Some of the long term effects include suicide and in extreme cases, homicide.

It is common for bullying to cause significant instances of violence, and in some cases it affects the victim’s psychological health. As bullying has evolved over the years, so have its effects on all of the victims.
