Metering: TTL center-weighted (60/40), meter activated by lightly pressing shutter release button, EV 1 - 18 at ISO 100, f 1.4.Viewfinder: Fixed eye level pentaprism, 0.85x magnification, 92% frame coverage, needle match exposure meter displays shutter speed and small window displays lens aperture.Lens mount: Nikon F bayonet AI-s (compatible with Non-AI lenses).Films: 35mm, speeds ISO 12 to 4000 (manual selection). The replacement model FE2 cannot use the old style non-Ai lens but the original FE can with the use of stop down metering or manual exposure. Works fine with VR lenses but VR is disabled. It can use just about every F-mount lens except a few old style fish eyes and G lens without the aperture ring. The FE has one of the largest ranges for lens compatibility. Batteries must be removed when using the optional motor drives MD-11 and MD-12. A battery check feature is also available.
Recommended batteries are 2x 1.55v SR44 silver oxide or 1x 3v 2L44, but can still function with basic LR44. Push toward the lens for AE lock function. AE lock is also provided but it is hidden on the self timer lever. Also provided is an aperture priority automatic exposure mode which can expose up to 1min. When batteries fail it has a fall-back speed of 1/90s marked M90. The FE offers a shutter speed of 8 sec to 1/1000 with a max speed in automatic mode of 1/125 with electronic flash. These cameras were more compact and lighter than the F/F2 and while the FM was fully manual the FE had an electronic shutter and Aperture Priority auto exposure. Nikon introduced the FM and then the FE as compliments to the Nikkormat line as mid-tier advanced amateur photographic cameras.
